Real-Time Rural Water Quality Monitoring with IoT & AI Analytics

Low-power sensors, edge gateways, and private-cloud analytics to improve drinking water safety in rural communities.

Executive Summary

In many rural areas across Africa, drinking water sourced from boreholes is often consumed without continuous quality assurance. Unlike municipal and water board supplied water; which undergoes extensive quality control, borehole water supplied to rural communities from boreholes is frequently left out of routine monitoring due to access challenges and the high cost of manual sampling. AQRESS partnered with a client to deliver an IoT-enabled water quality monitoring solution that removes the need for constant human intervention. By installing water quality monitoring sensors at water storage facilities such as tanks and reservoirs in rural communities, clinics, and schools, and transmitting data via a low-powered IoT gateway to a private cloud environment, the project enabled real-time water quality monitoring, automated reporting, and alerts when parameters move out of specification. Data is visualized in an AI-enabled IoT platform for continuous oversight and improved response time.

Problem Statement

The challenge was that drinking water from boreholes especially in rural areas often does not comply with SANS 241 drinking water quality standard. Manual lab sampling need to happen which requires traveling in rural areas that are already not easily accessible. This is a challenge across in most rural areas in Africa.

SANS 241 compliance riskBorehole drinking water quality often does not comply with SANS 241 in rural areas.
Manual sampling constraintsManual lab sampling requires travel to rural areas that are not easily accessible.
Unequal monitoring coverageMunicipal supply is extensively controlled; borehole water in rural communities is often left out.
Delayed actionNon-compliance may persist between sampling cycles due to time and logistics.

The Solution

This project removed human intervention by collecting water quality data from various sites and providing alerts when water quality is out of specifications by implementing the folliwing:

1) Field Instrumentation & Site Works

  • Installation of water quality monitoring sensors at water storage facilities such as tanks and reservoirs.
  • Deployment at rural communities, clinics, and schools.

2) Low-Powered Edge Connectivity

  • Via a low-powered IoT gateway, data is transmitted from remote sites.
  • Designed for environments with limited infrastructure and difficult access.

3) Private Cloud Storage & Analytics

  • Data transmitted to a private cloud environment for storage and analytics.
  • Centralized access to multi-site monitoring data.

4) AI-Enabled Platform Visualization & Alerting

  • Data is visualised in an AI enable IoT platform for real time monitoring and reporting.
  • Alerts are generated when water quality is out of specifications.

The Team

AQRESS deployed an experienced team of engineers and software developers to complete the project from site works to software integration:
